The Desoto Savannah is located in a prime historic district location, offering easy access to Savannah’s attractions. While praised for its friendly staff and convenient location, recent reviews indicate recurring issues with room cleanliness, noise levels, outdated amenities, and inconsistent service. Several guests reported issues with room functionality, food quality, and a lack of basic amenities like refrigerators or coffee makers.
This hotel was fairly quiet which was good. The people who work there were very friendly and helpful. The in hotel breakfast / coffee area's food selection left a bit to be desired. We did not eat at the hotel's restaurant because we were honestly kinda turned off from the breakfast area and had a feeling the restaurant would be the same. As far as the rooms go, the beds were not bad, the room was not bad, but unless you had a executive suite (we did have that executive suite), the bathroom door opens straight next to the toilet and many of the people we were with had to nearly climb over the toilet to get to the shower. They also said that the towels hang just over the toilet and easily fall into the toilet if you aren't very careful. As far as location goes, no complaints. It was close to a store that was open 24/7 thank goodness because the hotel doesn't really have much of a selection of items to purchase after breakfast hours are over and the breakfast area closes down. There is a small gift shop in the hotel.... but it has no food items and was not open very often. The valet guys were very nice and were careful with our vehicle. They were happy to point us in the right direction when we were out and about. They also gave us recommendations for places to eat.
“A 5-Star Prison with a Great Bar” This place is the kind of hotel that makes you question your life choices. Only one elevator worked, so every trip upstairs felt like waiting in line for a ride at Disneyland — except without the fun at the end. I had to ask for a refrigerator, as if keeping food cold was some kind of VIP luxury. The slider to the balcony was screwed shut, which I assume is less about safety and more about preventing guests from making a run for it. The hallway smelled like a dead body — either that or the carpet is fermenting. The gym equipment looked like it had been through a war (and lost), and the employees’ attitudes suggested they’d rather wrestle alligators than help a guest. No coffee maker in the room either — which is cruel and unusual punishment in my book. The bathroom didn’t have an exhaust fan, so every shower felt like I was hotboxing myself with steam and regret. Now, to be fair: the bar was the shining star. Drinks were solid, the atmosphere was lively, and Charlie the valet was the friendliest human within a five-mile radius. Howard the concierge, however, was hit-or-miss — some of his recommendations made me wonder if he was just pulling names out of a hat. Overall? If you love broken amenities, eau de corpse in the hallway, and staff who seem perpetually allergic to smiling, this is the place for you. Otherwise, grab a drink at the bar, tip Charlie, and book your actual stay somewhere else.
Loud! That is my take away. The hotel itself (lobby, location) is great. The rooms are clean, water plenty hot (love that). But as Jim D said, none of that matters if you can’t sleep. I can say with certainty, that this is the noisiest hotel I have ever stayed in. Mind you we were on a corner with a great view. But you can hear everything outside, people talking, trucks, a dog two blocks away and some very loud, drill into concrete sound at 5:45 am! ( no idea what that was). It did not help that the first night our sliding door would not close all the way . The next morning I realized, they just left masking tape on it from a painting job… from what looked like a year ago, and it was slightly off the track. Two easy fixes no one bothered to do. I never reached out to management, nothing they can do to stop noise from outside their hotel, but I would highly recommend they invest in noise canceling windows/doors. We are very happy to be moving on to a different hotel.
This is really a unique property with a fascinating history. Cannot beat the location, close to so many things that make Savannah Savannah. The staff is excellent and genuinely seems happy to work there. We had breakfast in the hotel restaurant, and it was really outstanding, best grits ever, and considering it’s a pretty high end hotel, the prices were very reasonable. The only reason why I’m not giving it five stars is the rooms are pretty sparse, there’s no microwave. There’s no refrigerator. There’s no ice bucket!!!!! .There’s no coffee maker and get this, on the balconies there’s no chairs.? When I go to a Hampton Inn, I get all these things (not balcony chairs) and now I’m paying 200 bucks a night (which is off-season promotional rate), and I don’t get any of those things above, but I do get a fancy umbrella? One of the things that makes this hotel special is it’s the tallest building in Savannah and the views from the higher floors with the balconies are just crazy good and they don’t even have chairs? I mean to sit out there and have a cup of coffee in the morning and watch the city or have a cocktail. I asked the reception desk about this, and I got some kind of word salad about there was a renovation and they never got around to putting the chairs back or something to that effect. Pro tip, about 100 yards past the entrance to the hotel, there is a parking garage and it’s may be $15 a night as opposed to the $48 that you’re going to pay plus tipping the valet. Also, they will provide a mini fridge free of charge if you ask, and I would imagine they will put a couple chairs on your balcony if you requested it.
My friend and I stayed here for 3 days this past weekend. I called the week before to ask if the pool would be open. I was told it would be. The lady I spoke with said it was closed the week I had called but it would be back open the week we arrive. It unfortunately was not. They have valet parking. The hotel itself is in the perfect location. You are a 5-10 minute walk from everything. We were given a $23 voucher (each of us) to use in the hotel bar or cafe. We decided to use it in the hotel bar for food. The food was not good. I’m glad it was free! I got the mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce and the pimento cheese with crackers. The mozzarella sticks didn’t have any taste and the marina sauce was bland. The crackers were hard and the pimento cheese was pretty much shredded cheese. We were not a fan of the food at the cafe either. I had an iced vanilla latte one morning and an iced honey bee latte the next morning. They were average. I also had the Madison breakfast sandwich, it was missing something. It needed some sort of sauce or seasoning. Everything was bland. The valet area will store your luggage if you need to check out and have a while before your flight leaves. They valet staff were very friendly. The room itself was clean. The beds were very comfortable. I am very pleased with our room and beds/pillows. We didn’t have a fridge in our room. Not sure if that’s all rooms or just ours. Overall, it is a nice hotel in a great location. I would like to come back again during the summer. All of the staff were very friendly and hopeful. Our only complaints are the food quality and the pool nkt being open. Otherwise it was great!
If you are considering staying here, DON'T! We were woken up bright and early to construction on a balcony rigjt above our room starting at 7:00 a.m. This wouldn't have been a problem if anyone bothered to give us notice prior to booking, upon arrival, or even as we were getting help taking our bags up. For such a large hotel you would think there would be some kind of planning such as, blocking off rooms near construction, offering accommodations, or the very least honest and transparent communication. Tried calling the front desk who was not only rude and hung up on us. Was approached by the concierge (I believe his name was Howard) upon leaving. I tried to explain my frustrations in a calm and understanding manner asking to speak with whoever was in charge. He took down my info and said someone would call me. Suprise, thst never happened either. We visit Savannah quite frequently, but will not be back to DeSoto. Will say that valet, parking and security staff were very nice. But thats about all I can say for positive remarks.
As I write this, I am finishing my last nights stay here. This is our fourth night and the city is loud. That was expected. The neighbors playing music and being discourteous was unexpected. There was a thumping bass beat that was more felt than heard. I questioned the management about if it was a local club. They stated no club on this side of the street and there is a noise ordinance at 10:00. They then offered to send up earplugs. Earplugs?!? Really?!? That is as far as your customer service goes? If it continues please let them know. I put on my noise cancelling headphones, but when the battery died 3 hours later, I asked them to step in again. Crickets from management. I finally pounded on the wall. That got them to quiet down some. Let’s add some other detail to the room… The balcony, which I was excited to use on New Years Eve, was screwed shut. The slider, that used to be the door, was drafty and made it so we had to set the thermostat much higher than we would ever set it. The room was old, run down and not on par with a four star hotel. They gave us a coupon upon arrival for $23.00 and more $10.00 coupons for not having daily room service that we were told could be used on property, but weren’t able to be used at the restaurant. So what good are these?!? The coffee shop would take them, but was out of hot chocolate the entire time we stayed. We left without using most of them. A couple of positives, the doormen were all friendly and offered assistance within the best of their abilities. The location within the historic district is nice as almost everything is within walking distance. However, those two positives, do not make up for a lost nights sleep. We will be back to Savannah, but not to this hotel, even if it’s the last place with rooms.
Outstanding Service Thanks to Kelvin! After having a terrible experience at a different hotel, our family arrived at The DeSoto feeling exhausted and disappointed. From the moment we met Kelvin, everything changed. He truly went above and beyond to make sure we felt welcomed, comfortable, and taken care of. Kelvin was incredibly kind, patient, and helpful, and his genuine care turned our stay into an amazing experience. He didn’t just do his job—he made us feel valued and restored our faith in great hospitality. Because of him, our trip completely turned around. Kelvin is a true asset to The DeSoto, and we cannot thank him enough. We will absolutely be back and will always remember how special he made our stay. Savannah is lucky to have people like him!
Our stay was nothing short of amazing! Charlie F. Brought a smile to our face every single morning as we left to walk the town everyday. My only complaint was there not being a fridge in the room but we survived! The people were amazing and the view was beautiful!
My husband and I spent one night at the DeSoto and were very happy with the service! The hotel was beautiful, clean, and decorated with Christmas trees through out. The bed was comfortable and the room spotless. The check in process was easy too. We grabbed coffee at the coffee bar downstairs which was very good. The valet was very convenient and the personnel working the valet were fast and friendly! (Thank you Gary!). We would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to others.
